Wanderlust Wednesday: Moscow

Wanderlust Wednesday is a series where I revisit a past travel adventure and memory. This week, we’re taking a look at Moscow, Russia.

WW - 2012 - Moscow 003

Although they are only 650kms apart, there’s almost no comparing St. Petersburg and Moscow—at least in m mind. While St. Petersburg was magical, ostentatious and full of old world charm, when I visited Moscow in 2012, it just wasn’t. To be completely honest, Moscow was cold, a bit sterile, and full of military and police personnel.

The above photo was taking on our arrival in the city centre of Moscow. Our bus had plans to drop us right off at Red Square, but that didn’t happen. As we drove up, the streets were blocked with military and police: we were going nowhere. This was a scene we encountered more than a few times as we tried to explore Moscow. We happened to be there over Moscow’s City Day and the city was shut down in more ways than one: police checkpoints and metal detectors littered the streets, Red Square was closed for all but an hour, and many other city sights were off-limits.

It wasn’t exactly the trip I had in mind when I left Canada, but it was unique, to say the least. As I said, Moscow definitely isn’t St. Petersburg, but I still can’t wait to go back to prove my first impression wrong.

Have you been to Moscow? What did you think?
