Kicking Off Week Four in Madrid

WEEK 4! Seriously, how did that happen?! It feels like just yesterday we arrived in Madrid and checked into our first (of 4) accommodations. A lot has happened in a relatively short amount of time (although at times it felt like life was at a standstill), so I’ll try to keep this update on the shorter side.

We arrived in Madrid via overnight train from Lisbon. I can’t say it’s my preferred method of travel, but I can’t say I wouldn’t do it again (budget-wise it was the right decision, sleep comfort-wise not so much). It was a holiday long weekend her in Madrid so we happily checked into our AirBnB, lounged and spent time catching up with friends from home who just happened to be in Madrid on vacation.

It was splendid.

Because we are living here for the next 10ish months, we felt no pressure to get up and see all the sites in one weekend, and it was so nice to relax and just enjoy our time (I’d also been battling something, so it was nice to give my body time to recoup and re-set). We ate, we drank, we caught up with the news of the world – it felt like the perfect staycation in a brand new city.

But it was short-lived.

As the holiday weekend came to a close, I knew it was time to get down to business and start looking for a permanent home. Our AirBnB in Trafalgar was fabulous; the host was nice as can be and the apartment was located within walking distance of everything we could imagine. But unfortunately, it was only temporary. We really needed somewhere we could unpack our suitcases.

Our first few weeks in Madrid have been a mixture of wonderful and stressful. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed exploring the various districts of Madrid, experiencing the cervezas and tapas, and trying to immerse ourselves in Spanish culture. But it hasn’t all been easy; apartment hunting tested my patience more than a few times (more on that to come), we discovered there was a huge language barrier, and that we’re definitely not in Kansas, er, or Canada, anymore.

And that’s the whole point of this adventure! Over the next year, we’re excited to explore more of Madrid, Spain, and Europe; to eat the foods; drink the wines; and enjoy every second of our year abroad – even those moments that aren’t so enjoyable at the time.

Stay tuned… in the coming days, I’ll be sharing my:

Your Madrid posts and photos have got me suddenly missing the beautiful city! I left my heart in Spain in 2008 and I definitely need to go back. I hope you’ve been loving it so far!
