#Take12Trips Challenge Update

Petite Adventures' #Take 12 Trips Update

Earlier this year, I shared with you my intentions to take part in the #Take12Trip challenge and given that we’ve pretty much hit the half-way point in 2016 (sidebar: how are we already half-way through the year?!) I figure this was as good a time as any to check in and see where I’m at.

Before we get started, as a reminder, the #Take12Triips Challenge is designed to inspire travellers to make a commitment to getting out once and month and exploring – whether that’s day-trips, month-long adventures, or anything in between.

In my post, I described some of my dream trips for the months ahead. And, as with all the best-laid plans of mice and men, most of the months did not go as expected.

So, let’s take a look…

  • Dream: Spain
  • Reality: Helsinki, Finland; Tallinn, Estonia; Segovia, Spain.

We kicked off January in Helsinki and then travelled to Tallinn, so technically my checkmark for January was earned, but we wouldn’t stop there. Nope, we actually followed the plan and ended up visiting Segovia, a charming town an hour or so north of Spain. It was just a day trip but it was fantastic to see the sights and explore a new area of the country.

  • Dream: Spain
  • Reality: Zip. Zilch. Nada.

February is a short month to begin with, and for us it was one of the busiest. Dave’s school schedule picked up, and I was consumed with blogging and attempting to learn Spanish, so the month was flying by faster than usual. I quickly realised that just a month into this Challenge I was going to fail, so I booked myself a day trip to Avila to explore the city and walk the walls. Unfortunately, the weather was awful and I had a horrible sleep, so at the last minute I decided to cancel. It was hard, but the right thing to do.

Although February was a bit of a bust, I soon made up for it…

  • Dream: Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary
  • Reality: Brussels, Belgium; Valencia, Spain; Marrakech, Morocco; Prague, Czech Republic; Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; Budapest, Hungary.

…And boy did I ever. March was jam-packed with adventures near and far; with new cities, new foods and so many amazing adventures and memories!

April Title Card with Avila, Spain skyline in the background - Petite Adventures' #Take 12 Trips Update

  • Dream: Italy
  • Reality: Avila, Spain; Salamanca, Spain; Palma, Spain; Catania, Italy; Taormina, Italy.

Recovering from our central European adventure, we kept it close-ish to home for the beginning of the month, exploring two cities a couple of hours north of Madrid. Following a few quieter weeks at home, we decided it was time for some sunshine, so we found a cheap deal and jetted off to Mallorca. And, then a week later we were off to Italy.

Although it wasn’t the Italian getaway that I had originally envisioned (Cinque Terre, Rome…) I was so happy to finally check Italy off my bucket list, and I can’t wait to go back!

  • Dream: France
  • Reality: Taormina, Italy; Catania, Italy.

Well, France and the French Open did not happen, but that’s okay. Technically, this is the only month that I’ve been flat out wrong. Even still, our time in Taormina was pretty amazing, so you can’t complain there!

June Title Card with Amsterdam cityscene in the background - Petite Adventures' #Take 12 Trips Update

  • Dream: England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales
  • Reality: Leeds, England; Manchester, England; Bruges, Belgium; Ghent, Belgium; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Brussels, Belgium;

Again, not exactly the trip we had planned but it was nice to *finally* visit the UK, albeit, even if it was for a mere couple of days.

Thanks to an insanely good deal on a flight, about a week after we got back from Leeds we were off again and on to Belgium and the Netherlands. It rained pretty much the entire time we were there, but we had a fantastic time visiting, exploring, and drinking beer! More details about these trips and cities to come soon 🙂

July Title Card with Stockholm skyline in the background - Petite Adventures' #Take 12 Trips Update

  • Dream: Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands
  • Reality: Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark.

I had huge dreams for July. I wanted to visit all of Scandinavia, but and extended visit just wasn’t in the cards for us. Instead of visiting four countries, we’ll be visiting two. It’s not too shabby, and honestly, I can’t complain at all! Returning to Stockholm and getting the chance to explore Malmo and Copenhagen (and see The Bridge!) has me beyond excited! It’s definitely a dream trip for me!

Even though summer is on our doorstep, we still don’t have plans for the months beyond July. There are many, many, many ideas being floated around, but nothing planned. As soon as we finally make a decision, you reader-friends will be the first to know!

Thanks! This year has been a bit of an anomaly, most years I don’t get to travel as much, but it’s been amazing! Glad I took the chance and made it all happen.

Thanks! It was quite thehalf-year! I definitely won’t be keeping up the same pace (my bank account just couldn’t handle it haha) but hope to at least stick to one mini-trip per month!

Thank you! My goal for our year abroad was to travel as much I could, so definitely took advantage of every opportunity. I have a feeling the rest of 2016 will be much, much quieter!

I’m insanely jealous that you’ve been able to do so many trips already this year! Less, Take 12, More I’ll Take 112 Thanks in your case! I love the sound of the challenge and would really like to take part next year. #MondayEscapes

Excellent and kudos to you for taking so many. I’ve been taking the #Take12Trips challenge for 3 straight years now, but after 2 successful years, the third isn’t going too well for me. I’ve only managed one trip to Thailand this year, so far! 😦
I have 3 more trips planned in the next few months but definitely won’t reach the goal of 12 this year, unfortunately!
