Welcome to September, reader-friends!
Although I like summer with its heat and sunshine, I love fall – it’s by far my favourite season, and not just for the fashions! There’s just something about September that makes me want to set goals, start new routines and kick off new adventures.
And this year, we’re doing just that!
In case you missed it, in my August month in review post I announced that our overseas adventure is continuing because we’ve moved to Leeds, England! Dave has accepted a position as a research fellow at the University of Leeds, so we’ll be splitting the next few years between Stockholm, Sweden and Leeds, England.
How did we get here? Let’s start at the beginning.
Back in June, we made a whirlwind trip up to Leeds. I mentioned it briefly here on the blog, but for the most part, I was very tight lipped about it. That’s because the purpose of our trip was for Dave to interview with the University. We spent less than 36 hours in the city, but from what we saw, we liked it.
Over the next couple of weeks, we anxiously awaited the decision from the University, all the while wrapping up your life in Madrid and continuing to plan our summer time travels throughout the Balkans.
And then one day, it all changed.
We found out at the end of June that Dave had been accepted (yay!) and our plans changed. As we started to explore UK Work Visas we realised that it wasn’t feasible for us to travel throughout the summer, so we abandoned our plan and decided to spend the summer back home in Canada.
We flew back to Toronto and within a week we were sitting at the Visa Application Centre with stacks of documents on our laps – everything from University degrees to documents proving our relationship. I won’t lie, it was stressful. Every morning over the next two weeks I woke up expecting to have an email declaring that I’d been denied.
It was super fun </sarcasm>.
After 14 agonising days of worrying, we found out we were approved. Phew!
From that moment on, everything moved at an insane pace. We booked our flights, an initial hotel stay and then spent the remainder of the month zipping back and forth between Toronto and Ottawa trying to soak up as many minutes with friends and family as possible.
And then, as quickly as we landed, we were off!
We arrived in Leeds mid-week last week and hit the ground running. Well, Dave hit the ground running, I was hit with extreme jetlag so I’ve been moving very slowly. But, we’ve still managed to explore, search for apartments and soak in as much of Leeds as we can (before falling asleep at 8PM).
While it’s only been a few days, we’re very excited to kick off this second phase of our overseas adventure – and I hope you’ll come along for the ride!
