Well, reader-friends, it’s officially fall. The leaves are changing, the weather is getting cooler, and I can’t think of anything better than curling up and digging into a warm and delicious dish of macaroni and cheese.
Not what you were expecting?
Mac’n’cheese isn’t most peoples’ go-to dish for fall, but it should be. I mean, think about it, it’s warm, it’s filling, its main ingredient is cheese: mac ‘n’ cheese is the perfect fall food!
Mac’n’Cheese has long been one of my guilty pleasures. Now, I’m not talking about the Kraft Dinner kind of mac ‘n’ cheese, which definitely has it’s time and place; no I’m talking about the more gourmet, homemade and unique options that you find beyond the box.
Thankfully, I don’t have to look very far in Leeds to find these fares, because much to my surprise (and delight) mac ‘n’ cheese been on pretty much every menu I’ve seen.
It’s been a joy to visit restaurants and sample the different kinds these past few weeks, and I know it would be far to keep this delicious knowledge all to myself. So, here are my top choices for the most savoury, spicy and satisfying mac ‘n’ cheeses in Leeds:
The mac ‘n’ cheese is only offered as a side dish at The Phoenix, but be prepared – this could be a meal in itself. A delicious combination of gooey cheeses, this mac ‘n’ cheese dish was cooked to perfection. Is there anything better than cracking through a crispy layer of cheese to unearth the gooey deliciousness below. I ordered it alongside the buffalo wings, which were also delicious, but adding the leftover wing sauce to the mac ‘n’ cheese gave this creamy and savoury dish an unexpected sweet element.
Nation of Shopkeepers gets two mentions on this list because they have two of the most unique and delicious macin’ cheeses I’ve ever eaten:
This is not for the faint of heart. I eat a lot of spicy food (A LOT) and this was almost too much for me. I said almost, clearly I devoured as much as I needed to put myself into a food coma. This delicious mac ‘n’ cheese was topped with a creamy, spicy Sriracha sauce; it simultaneous warmed my tummy and lit my tongue on fire. It was amazing, and I can’t wait to go back for round two.
Garlic mac ‘n’ cheese
How do you make a good dish even better? By adding garlic, that’s how. As I mentioned above, the mac ‘n’ cheese at Nation of Shopkeepers is divine: it’s gooey, it’s rich, it’s perfect. But adding garlic took it to a whole new flavour level. A little bit of spice and flavour, a whole lot of amazing.
The mac ‘n’ cheese balls I tried at The Pit are definitely more of a snack than they are a meal, but they were delicious nonetheless. Crispy and crunchy on the outside, but warm and gooey on the inside, they were the perfect bar snack on a rainy Friday night.
Hungry yet? Because I know I am. Macaroni and cheese might not be the first thing you think of when you think fall, but it should be. It’s delicious, its filling and it will warm you up a million times more than a pumpkin spice latte.
