Petite Adventures Month in Review: February 2017

SERIOUSLY?! How is it March?

I feel like just yesterday we were ringing in the New Year and in the blink of an eye we’re already a week into March. Not to sound too clichéd, but 2017 is just flying by!

But before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s take a look back at February.

February was one of those months that struck the perfect balance: a little bit of travel (both near and far), a little bit of work, and a little bit of relaxing. Overall, it was a wonderful month.

At the end of January, after reading Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, I joked to Dave that we should take up walking as a new hobby, as it would be a good excuse to get out and see more of England. Well, little did I know that not only would we actually get into it, but we would fall in love and become those people who do research and hop on trains, all in the hopes of doing a bit of walking. Yes, that’s right, Dave and I are *those* people now. We’re walkers (but sans the gear).

This is how we found ourselves in the foggy village of Marsden early one Saturday morning, making our way to the National Trust walk along with all the other senior citizens. The walk in Marsden was short but spectacular. We spent a few hours wandering the moors and walking along Butterly, Blakeley and Wessenden Reservoirs before capping off the day with a pint in the pub.

The following weekend, we were off again, but this time en route north to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. On a cold and rainy Friday afternoon we hopped on the train and in less than three hours we found ourselves in the middle of Edinburgh. The weather that weekend wasn’t the best – it was rainy, foggy and windy, which was to be expected as it was early-February – but it gave the city a certain mystique and allure. We spent two full days wandering through the old town, seeing the sights and snacking on haggis before it was time to board the train and zip back along the coast to Leeds.

The rest of the month was spent at home – relaxing, working, and socialising.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH

I had such a great time visiting both Marsden and Edinburgh. Both trips were so different, but oh-so-enjoyable and reminded me to get up and out more, and to remember to take advantage of the time we have here to see the little town, villages and cities dotted throughout the UK.

LOWLIGHT OF THE MONTH

We really wanted to climb Arthur’s Seat and see the stunning views of Edinburgh, but the morning tried to make our ascent it was windy – we’re talking so windy that I was being blown around on terra firma – and my fear of heights kicked in hard. I didn’t even make it to the base before I pulled the plug on that activity. I felt bad, but I knew it was the right decision – seriously, who wants to spend an hour climbing up a steep mountain while feeling incredibly uncomfortable, only to stand at the top and feel even more uncomfortable as the wind pushes you closer to the edge.

No thank you.

One day we’ll go back and I’ll make it to the top. One day.

What I Read

What’s Next?

Despite all our best efforts, we have no travel plans for March. We spent hours, days really, searching Skyscanner for decent flights but we just couldn’t find anything that met our budget, our schedules and our bucket list.

Instead of forcing it we’ve both decided that this month we’ll focus our time and energies on work and saving so that later in the year we can do something/go somewhere really special.

That’s it for me. Tell me, what does March have in store for you?
