Located on Poland’s northern coast, Gdansk is a city known for its rich history and quaint seaside vibe. It might not be the first or even second Polish city you think of but for me, it ranks as #1.

Last January, Dave and I took advantage of some cheap deals and went for a weekend city break. We weren’t exactly sure what to expect from the city, but we were not disappointed. From the food to the sights, Gdansk blew us away.

Here are the top five reasons I think you should plan a visit to Gdansk.

It’s Easy To Get To

Several of Europe’s low-cost carriers, including RyanAir and Wizzair, fly to Gdansk a few times each week. At less than two-and-a-half hours from the UK (and just over an hour from Stockholm), these short and direct flights make Gdansk an incredibly attractive destination for a quick city break.

Not only is the flight to Gdansk short, but the price is right. Last year, we flew directly from Leeds to Gdansk for less than £35 CAD return each. This year, over Black Friday/Cyber Monday I saw prices as low as £5 one way!

With prices like that, there’s honestly no reason not to visit this gem of a city.

It’s Affordable

It’s not just the price of flights that makes Gdansk such an attractive option for an affordable weekend away. From the food to the accommodations everything was reasonably priced and a great value.

Throughout our visit, we ate fabulous meals, sampled many local beers, and stayed in a centrally located 3-star hotel, all without breaking the bank.

The Food

Some of the best, most memorable meals I ate in the last year were in Gdansk. From the traditional polish milk bar dinner to the sweet and savoury pierogi lunch feast to the hipster breakfast box, everything was amazing.

The flavours were incredible, the portions were generous, and the prices were shockingly inexpensive – two main courses and nine-plus beers for less than £30, yes, please!

It’s Colourful

The Old Town is made up of small cobblestone streets lined with houses and buildings sporting colourful facades. The city is full of so much charm, colour and character that you can’t help but love smile.

It’s Perfect

Gdansk is a beautiful city with a charming old town centre and stunning architecture. If you’re looking to visit a city with a unique culture and a rich history, then Gdansk is the city for you!
