My Three Favourite Things About Bar Harbor, Maine

My Three Favourite Things About Bar Harbor, Maine []

We had no plans to go to Bar Harbor, Maine, following our time in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. We had no plans whatsoever to even leave Canada. Our plan was to go from St. Andrews and continue on to Shediac (home of the world’s largest lobster) before turning around and heading home. We had reservations, maps and plans, and then at the last moment we threw caution to the wind and headed south to Maine.

And it was the best decision ever.

From St. Andrew’s we drove down the coast, island-hopping our way to Bar Harbor, a town of approx. 5,200 people located on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine. Being the end of summer, the small town was alive and bustling. We couldn’t wait to get out of the car and experience as much as we could.

There was a lot to love about Bar Harbor, but three things really stood out for me.

The Food

You can’t talk about Bar Habor and not talk about the food–specifically, the lobster. It is beyond amazing. We kicked off our evening by indulging in butter-drenched lobster while overlooking the sea. It was so touristy, but we didn’t care. The seafood was cooked perfectly and I couldn’t get enough. I could have definitely eaten more than the pound or so that I ordered.

The People

After indulging in dinner, we decided to make our way home by bar hopping. It was a genius idea. We visited three or four establishments, each filled with some of the nicest people we’ve ever met. Throughout the night, we chatted with tourists, bartenders, locals and more about anything and everything. It was a fantastic evening.

The Scenery

Like most coastal cities and towns, the scenery is amazing! There’s just something about looking out over the ocean and seeing tree-covered islands dotting the horizon. Maybe it’s because I grew up near the ocean, but it gives me an immediate sense of calm.

We only spent one night in Bar Harbor, but it was a fun one. If I had the opportunity to visit this small town again one summer, believe you me, I’d be all over it.

  1. My boyfriend and I have been trying to get a trip to Maine together for the longest time. We’re not even that far away, so we really need to make it happen! I’ve heard excellent things about the lobster, so I must say I was excited to see it top your list. 🙂 Have you been anywhere else in Maine?
