My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries

My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries [petiteadventures.org]

As mentioned last week in my Travel Bucket List Sweden, one of the things I’m looking forward to now that we call Stockholm home is exploring more of the country, as well as its Nordic neighbours.

The Nordic countries generally refer to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and their territories including the Faroe and Åland Islands. This is an area of the world I’ve long been fascinated with, and have had the opportunity to explore a little bit.

But a little bit is never enough! Over the next few months, I’ll hopefully be getting up and out, and exploring and experiencing as much of the Nordic countries as possible.

Here are the top five things I want to see, do and eat in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway:

Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark - My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries [petiteadventures.org]

  • Visit Aalborg, Denmark’s fourth biggest city, known for its revitalized waterfront on the Limfjord.
  • Explore the up-and-coming food and travel scenes in Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city,
  • Sample Danish cheese.
  • Eat smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches made on delicious dark rye bread. I’ve sampled them before, but clearly haven’t had enough.
  • Go biking, because I’m pretty sure it’s required when you visit Denmark.

Finland

Aland Islands, Finland - My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries [petiteadventures.org]

  • Visit Rovaniemi, the gateway to Lapland and the home of Santa Claus.
  • Explore the Åland Islands, is an archipelago found between Sweden and Finland. They are an autonomous region of Finland but the native language is Swedish. They look really peaceful and beautiful and I would love to visit this global anomaly.
  • See a reindeer.
  • Sauna, because who doesn’t like being warm in the middle of winter.
  • Go on an icebreaker cruise.

Iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland - My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries [petiteadventures.org]

  • Visit Reykjavík, because it’s about time I check that bad boy off my bucket list.
  • Drive the ring road or at least a portion of it. Maybe take a trip north to the village Trapped, a fantastic Nordic Noir programme, was set in.
  • Search for elves (or the hidden people).
  • Eat a pylsa (an Icelandic hot dog).
  • Relax in the Blue Lagoon.

Norway

Tromso, Norway - My Travel Bucket List: The Nordic Countries [petiteadventures.org]

  • Visit Tromsø, a town located 400km north of the arctic circle.
  • Explore Oslo.
  • See the fjords preferably by boat.
  • Eat the national dish, fårikål, a stewed casserole of lamb’s meat and cabbage.
  • Enjoying the national pastime, hiking.

  1. What a fun travel list and I’m a tad bit jealous you get to live in the Scandinavian region 🙂 It’s be such a memorable experience. The Nordic countries and some of our favorites. We’ve been to all of them with the exception of the territories. We highly recommend glacier hiking and riding on those adorable Icelandic horses in Iceland. For Norway, do the Norway in a Nutshell tour. If you can, take a day trip or weekend to Tallinn, Estonia from Helsinki too. Enjoy your new home!

  2. Also a bit jealous you get to explore all this beautiful Scandinavian places! Haven’t been yet to any of them, but it’s definitely on my bucket list! Great list and post
