Stockholm is a city of style and simplicity.

Spend any time walking around and you’ll notice that not only is everyone gorgeous, but they are all incredibly fashionable and impeccably dressed.

Since moving to Stockholm I’ve spent a fair bit of time studying the style of people around me. Whether sitting on the metro or walking around town, I’m always taking mental notes on just how I can achieve that effortless Stockholm style.

Today, I’m sharing with you the fruits of my labours: Here are the top five things you should add to your closet to get that effortlessly chic Stockholm look.

The first key piece that you’ll need to dress like a Stockholmer is a fantastic pair of skinny black jeans. Skinny black jeans are a staple in every Stockholm-woman’s wardrobe. Form young to old you’ll see women of all ages strutting their stuff around Stockholm them.

Skinny jeans are one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your closet; they literally go with everything. From t-shirts to blouses, boots to stilettos, you can wear your classic black skinnies on pretty much any occasion.

My black skinny jeans have been on heavy rotation since I added them to my closet last year (in fact, I’m wearing them as I type this). I wear them everywhere; from grocery shopping to nights outs, I always feel the perfect balance of put together and casual when I have them on.

Trainers for Spring and Summer

Throughout the spring and summer months, one shoe reigns supreme in Stockholm and that is the white Converse Chuck Taylors. Everywhere you look, people will be rocking these low-rise flat sneakers. They are extremely comfortable and will take you through the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan to the streets of Soldermalm with fashionable ease.

Ankle Boots for Winter and Fall

The weather in Stockholm can be quite unpredictable in fall and winter: snow one day, rain the next. This is why it’s so important to find a shoe that can weather any storm.

Enter the ankle boot (or Chelsea boot).

This chic style of footwear is the ultimate in cool these days. They can be paired with anything from dresses to jeans, giving you a perfectly rock’n’roll look without sacrificing comfort.

A few weeks ago, after a few too many days of cold feet and dodging puddles, I retired my trainers and invested in a pair of Blundstones. These waterproof and weatherproof boots have taken me from downtown to the countryside keeping me warm and comfortable and feeling cute too.

Stockholm is known for its cold, long and dark winters. And, there’s no better way to stylishly survive the season than by topping off your look with a chic black (noticing a bit of a trend here?) wool coat.

Whether you prefer a long or short style, a wool coat gives any ensemble that perfect finishing touch.

Top off your look by wrapping an oversized or blanket scarf around your neck (the bigger the better) and pulling on a beanie/toque or cap on, and just like that, you’re ready to hit the streets of Östermalm.

  1. Love this! Can you do a post like this on Barcelona? By the way, I’ve read skinny jeans are out and wide slacks are in again, but I must say I have not seen this in the streets and airports in France and the US.
